" A converted warehouse with high ceilings and exposed pipes, Avalon looks more like a loft space for artists than a public school. Two lead teachers share most of the school’s administrative duties, but all decisions — curriculum, schedule, salaries — are made by the entire group of 28. They meet two mornings a week, marching through each agenda item in a matter of minutes." https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/to-improve-schools-let-teachers-run-them/2015/01/16/9ce7f8e2-8d36-11e4-8ff4-fb93129c9c8b_story.html?utm_term=.9d9fca91ed2d

https://qz.com/845834/a-stealthy-education-revolution-worldwide-is-giving-kids-the-skills-to-be-21st-century-citizens/ "While you can’t think critically without substantive knowledge, you also cannot work productively or engage in civil discourse if you can’t control your emotions, get along with your teachers and peers, and persevere when things get difficult. That realization is gradually leading some to a broader movement to reduce the focus on standardized testing and teach more skills relevant to life."

In my third year of teaching at Green School in Bali, My Colleague and friend, Glenn Chickering was doing his graduate degree at Antioch University in Education for Sustainability. Glenn brought his advisor out from New Hampshire, USA to deliver a professional development to our entire teaching staff. Paul Bocko came to teach us Critical Skills Classroom Strategies. It really influenced the teaching and learning at Green School and began the shift of focusing on skill development over standards. There are many great pedagogical ideas and very useful strategies in Antioch's Critical Skills framework. Lots to explore: https://www.antioch.edu/new-england/resources/centers-institutes/antioch-center-school-renewal/critical-skills-program/ And here is their resources library of teacher tools: https://www.antioch.edu/new-england/resources/centers-institutes/antioch-center-school-renewal/teacher-tools-critical-skills/
