If you have a choice, is it better to create a microschool (say up to 50 kids), or aim for a large school (say 500+)? Lots of intimacy and flexibility vs lots of diversity, resources and choice?

I don't think size matters, I agree on the organic growth. The size of the school is not the goal. If you know what the goal is, the size will follow.
there can be an organic growth from micro school to not micro school, there can be a lot of extra curriculum activities (ex. sports facilities) that can be rented from the city
School can become fluid. Many micro schools can form a medium school sharing resources.
